This paper is based on results from two research projects and aims at the elaboration of the basic road safety principles, which have to be followed in the urban road network management.  Emphasis is given to the access management as an example of efficient improvement of the urban road infrastructure.  International experience showed that an appropriate policy in urban road network management could bring spectacular results in the improvement of road safety in an urban area.  The integrated road safety programme should comprise the consistent implementation of series of measures, which have been proved successful in many cases of other European cities.  The appropriate hierarchisation of urban roads in combination with the proper access management according to the examined roads’ category could bring substantial improvements of road safety in the Greek cities.
