Workshops

IVORY – ‘AI for Vision Zero in Road Safety’ is an industrial doctorates network, aiming to develop a new framework for the integration of AI in road safety and create a new generation of leading researchers in the field, in order to address the UN Sustainable Development Goals target 3.6 (halving the number of traffic fatalities by 2030) and EC ‘Vision Zero’ strategy (eliminating traffic fatalities by 2050). IVORY brings together knowledge from engineering, data science and ethics of technology, in order to train 15 PhD researchers on new responsible AI applications for road user assistance and proactive infrastructure safety management. During this mid-term project Conference, IVORY researchers will showcase their work. We also host international key-note speakers, who will highlight the future challenges and opportunities in the field of AI in road safety.
The PHOEBE Workshop takes place back-to-back with the IRTAD 2026 Conference, making it an ideal opportunity for participants attending both events. The main purpose of the PHOEBE project is to develop an integrated framework for the predictive assessment of road safety and environmental performance in urban mobility systems. By combining advanced data sources such as video-based observations, telematics, infrastructure characteristics, and traffic simulation models, PHOEBE aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of risk in complex urban environments. The project integrates multi-scale data analysis and modelling techniques to assess the potential impact of safety interventions among three Use Cases (Athens, Valencia, West Midlands), to identify unsafe traffic interactions and to evaluate infrastructure safety performance. Through the integration of human behaviour modelling, demand modelling and infrastructure-based risk assessment, PHOEBE provides a highly advanced interdisciplinary approach, enabling the estimation of safety indicators and the evaluation of mitigation measures before their implementation. During the workshop, the framework and tools developed within the PHOEBE project will be presented, alongside key results. Particular emphasis will be placed on infrastructure safety assessment, behaviour analysis, traffic simulation and cost–benefit evaluation approaches.
The SOTERIA workshop at the IRTAD Conference will introduce participants to a data driven approach for enhancing urban safety, with a particular focus on the protection of Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs) in diverse European contexts. It will present how behavioural insights, micro mobility data and advanced analytics can support evidence based policy planning and the design of effective safety interventions. It will also provide a look at the SOTERIA Urban Safety Sandbox, a new framework enabling cities to assess the impact of potential risk mitigation strategies. Building on the project’s Living Labs and co creation activities, the workshop will bring together mobility experts and practitioners to discuss key challenges, emerging solutions and transferability across different European cities. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with innovative methodologies, explore infrastructure and other data needs, and contribute insights that will help shape SOTERIA’s final recommendations and alignment with Vision Zero objectives.
