The new punitive framework of the
new Greek Traffic Code is being put up for public consultation, with a view to road safety and the protection of human life, but also in line with the needs of modern mobility and the gradual digitization of procedures. The aim is to ensure driver compliance, impose fair penalties commensurate with the seriousness/dangerousness of each offense, and ensure the collection of fines. Penalties mainly concern the driver (fine, driving licence suspension, penalty points) and not the vehicle (registration suspension), as this may be used by more than one driver. In addition, there is provision for escalating penalties for drivers who commit frequent violations. In the same spirit, the method of payment of fines is specified so as to facilitate the repayment process without complex bureaucratic procedures. Particular attention is paid to the imposition of penalties and the collection of fines for offences committed by professional drivers from other countries, with the procedure being completed on the spot at the checkpoint where the offence is recorded.
