Road traffic injuries affect millions globally each year, with many survivors facing life-altering physical and psychological long-term consequences (LTC). The IMPROVA project aims to address this gap by developing a comprehensive framework for understanding, assessing, and mitigating LTC in Europe. Structured around five pillars, the methodology includes data harmonization, predictive modeling, enhanced Human Body Models (HBMs), virtual testing, and policy-oriented interventions. IMPROVA introduces a predictive formula to estimate LTC likelihood, standardized tools for data collection, and injury mechanism classifications. Special focus is given to vulnerable road users, personal protective equipment, and post-crash care. The project also delivers actionable guidelines and fosters a European knowledgebase on LTC. Ultimately, IMPROVA supports the EU’s Vision Zero goals by shifting the road safety focus beyond survival toward long-term recovery and resilience, offering scientifically grounded solutions for safer and more inclusive mobility.
