International experience as well as results from multi-year research in Greece are exploited in order to show the need for quantifying and monitoring engineering solutions aiming to improve road safety.  A series of quantified solutions concerning the improvement of driver behaviour, road infrastructure, vehicle situation, enforcement and post-crash treatment are presented, coupled with the respective indicative techniques for the implementation and efficiency monitoring.  Emphasis is put on engineering solutions appearing to be more important for the progressive improvement of road safety level in Greece, as these have been identified in the respective five-year strategic plan.  For the efficient improvement of road safety in Greece, a systematic and quantified programming of the road safety solutions is necessary, where their monitoring should be carried out by the use of specially selected performance indicators.
