The objective of this research is the development of a the first strategic plan for the improvement of road safety in Greece, the implementation of which will allow the reduction in the number of persons killed in Greece by 20% up to 2005. On this purpose, a detailed analysis of international experience took place, coupled by the systematic analysis of the current situation in Greece, which led not only to the identification of the targets, the structure and the actions of the Road Safety Strategic Plan but also to the elaboration of an integrated implementation scheme with a concrete time-schedule, a promotion and information plan and a quantified monitoring system.  The improvement of the current road safety level in Greece is possible as far as the Authorities will exploit successful experiences from abroad, escape from the logic of fragmented actions and adopt an integrated strategy for the efficient implementation of the proposed actions.
