Following the tragic events of September 11, 2001 in the USA, the Council of Ministers of Transport of the EU decided at the end of 2002 to adopt a Security Regulation in the field of Civil Aviation in an effort to secure a uniform and high level protection of civil aviation from illegal activities in the EU airports. This paper investigates the purpose and the application of this regulation according to the European Commission. Additionally, the directive adopted by the Council of Ministers of Transport of the EU under Greek Presidency is also investigated, which aims at verifying that none EU country applies the security standards in aviation that have been internationally accepted and at providing assistance in the implementation of these standards or otherwise to enforcing sanctions (Ramp Checks), wherever required.
