On the basis of cumulated experience of Transportation Engineers concerning the underlying causes of the current low level of transport service in most of the Greek urban areas, the elaboration of an integrated policy of sustainable development of urban transportation systems took place, which may face current inertia phenomena and lead to the progressive improvement of the level of transport service and the quality of life in the city.  Local Authorities and Communities should make basic choices (a city for pedestrians or for passenger cars? a city for its inhabitants, its workers or its visitors?) and promote them through two discrete categories of actions: integrated strategy actions and specific priority actions.  Only a systematic effort, with sufficient exploitation of knowledge, bold choices, appropriate organization and sufficient budget could lead to the exploitation of the important potential of the Greek urban areas and the progressive improvement of the quality of life.
