The European Commission published a breakdown of fatalities in urban roads in the EU by road user and (other) “main vehicle” involved in the crash. The available EU-wide data for 2022 shows that 38% of road traffic fatalities occured in urban areas, with vulnerable road users (pedestrians, cyclists and users of powered two-wheelers) representing almost 70% of total fatalities. The matrix shows clearly that urban road user fatalities occur overwhelmingly when a crash involves cars and lorries, underlining the need to improve protection of these vulnerable road users pdf5
