Marios Sekadakis is a Civil and Transportation Engineer, Research Associate, and PhD Candidate at the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). In 2020, he graduated in Civil Engineering from NTUA, majoring in Transportation Engineering. His research focuses on road safety, automated driving, and human–machine interaction, behavioral analysis, data-driven modeling, and traffic simulation. With over five years of research experience, he has authored 19 peer-reviewed journal papers, 3 book chapters, and 21 conference papers, and actively contributes to the CCAM Association as NTUA’s representative.

    • Involved in coding, data cleaning, and machine learning modeling of high-fidelity naturalistic and simulator driving data.
  • HADRIAN: “Holistic Approach for Driver Role Integration and Automation Allocation for European Mobility Needs” of the Horizons 2020 framework programme on transport research of the European Commission (2020-2023) 
    • NTUA led and supervised the successful execution of safety and impact assessments for a range of innovations in automated driving throughout the project, focusing on Human-Machine Interface (HMI), level transitions, and take-over responses.
  • SHOW: “SHared automation Operating models for Worldwide adoption” of the Horizons 2020 framework programme on transport research of the European Commission (2020-2024) 
    • NTUA led the safety assessment of automated driving across the innovative SHOW pilot sites in over 20 EU cities. In addition to this leadership, NTUA supported by simulating automated shuttles at the Madrid Mega site and developing an inclusive simulation suite tool. NTUA further contributed by creating a Policy Support Tool (PST) to aid various pilot sites.
  • ERSOnext: “Support to the European Road Safety Observatory” for the Directorate General for Transport and Mobility of the European Commission. (2025) 
    • Served as a key author in the development of the Thematic Report on Vehicle Safety, with a specific focus on the “Vehicle Safety: ADAS & Automation” issue.

  • 2023 – NTUA Thomaideio Award: awarded paper “COVID-19 and Driving Behavior: Which Were the Most Crucial Influencing Factors?” in the Data Science for Transportation Journal.
  • 2022 – Awarded a Ph.D. fellowship funding by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (H.F.R.I.) in 2022 for “Engineering Sciences & Technology” Scientific Area, among the 4th Call for H.F.R.I. Scholarships for PHD Candidates.
