The UN Road Safety Collaboration organised with great success the global campaign for the Fifth UN Global Road Safety Week, on 6-12 May 2019, under the themeLeadership for road safety. The goal of the global road safety week, was to generate a demand from the public and the civil society to generate demands for strong leadership for road safety, especially around concrete, evidence-based interventions which will save lives and to inspire leaders to take action by showcasing examples of strong leadership for road safety within governments, international agencies, NGOs, foundations, schools and universities, and private companies. link

ETSS/AROSO/PRI/IRF – Safer Roads & Mobility Conference, Abu Dhabi, 2018

The Emirati Traffic Safety Society (ETSS) along with the Arab Road Safety Organization (AROSO), La Prevention Routière Internationale (PRI) and the International Road Federation (Geneva, Switzerland) co-organized an International Conference on: “Safer Roads & Mobility” which was held with great success in Abu Dhabi, UAE, on 24 – 25th, October, 2018. The conference program focused specifically on Pillar II “Safer Roads and Mobility” of the Decade of Action for Road Safety (2011-2020) due to its sensitive impact on reducing road traffic fatalities.  pdf5

31st ICTCT Conference, Porto, 2018

The 31st ICTCT conference was held with great success in Porto, Portugal on 25-26th October 2018, under the main topic “On the track of future urban mobility: safety, human factors and technology. The conference was organised in close co-operation with the Research Centre for Territory, Transports and Environment, Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto, Portugal. The objective of the conference was to support the understanding of future trends in urban mobility and their implications for the safety of all road users.

SAFER – 6th International Conference on Driver Distraction and Inattention, Gothenburg, 2018

The 6th International Conference on Driver Distraction and Inattention (DDI2018) was held with great success in Gothenburg, Sweden, during October 15-17, 2018. Nearly 190 delegates from 26 countries attended DDI2018  which is a record number of delegates. The conference was hosted and co-organised by the SAFER Vehicle and Traffic Safety Centre at Chalmers in Sweden, the French Institute of Science and Technology for Transport, Development and Networks (IFSTTAR), and the Australian Road Research Group (ARRB). The conference’s theme was “Driver engagement during assisted driving” and a majority of the research results gave new valuable knowledge about how self-propelled vehicles should be designed to enable drivers to handle them.

8th Symposium of the European Association for Research in Transportation (hEART), Budapest, 2019

The 8th conference of European Association for Research in Transportation (hEART) took place in Budapest on 4-6 September 2019. The conference was organized by the Faculty of Transportation Engineering and Vehicle Engineering at Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME), and covered relevant areas of transportation research with specific focus on methods, models and planning of transport systems. The aim of the conference was to connect researchers in transport modeling, transport economics and transport policy with advanced practice. Bringing together leading experts and promising young researchers, the symposium offered an opportunity for scientific discussion and interaction in relatively small groups. InDeV, PROSPECT, XCYCLE – Final Event on Traffic Safety of Vulnerable Road Users, 2018

The final event of the three Horizon 2020 projects InDeV, PROSPECT and XCYCLE took place on October 12th 2018 at Applus+ IDIADA, 70 km south of the city of Barcelona. At this one-day event, results of these three projects on traffic safety analysis and integrated approach towards better protection of vulnerable road users were presented. The Annual Road Safety Conference of the Bar Ilan University, took place with great success on 5th July 2018 in Tel Aviv, Israel. PIARC – International Conference on Road Safety, 2018

The International Conference on Road Safety: A Commitment to the Present and a Challenge for the Future, organized by the World Road Association (PIARC), with Infraestruturas of Portugal (IP) and the Institute of Mobility and Transport (IMT), was held on 19-20 April in Lisbon, Portugal with great success and it brought together international and national experts working on road safety to share experiences and results. VTI – 18th international conference Road Safety on Five Continents, Jeju Island, South Korea 2018

The 18th international conference Road Safety on Five Continents (RS5C) took place with great success in May 16-18, 2018 on Jeju Island, South Korea. The conference is organised by VTI in close cooperation with Korea Transportation Safety Authority (KOTSA). With focus on traffic safety and health, experts presented and discussed about hot topics and the latest research in the road transport area. By providing a mutual ground for sharing knowledge and a forum to discuss mutual problems and their solutions, researchers, officials and other stakeholders can learn from results, experiences and success stories.

ICORSI – International Road Safety Symposium, Paris, 2018

The Independent Council for Road Safety International (ICORSI) organised the International Symposium: Road Safety Around the World: Future Concerns, which took place with great success in Paris, France on 18 March 2018. The one day symposium sponsored by ICORSI where fourteen papers were presented to focus on important theoretical and practical issues concerning road safety around the world. SafetyCube – Better Decision Making for Road Safety Conference, Vienna, 2018

The SafetyCube European Conference on Better Decision Making for Road Safety took place with great success on 22-23 March 2018, in Vienna. The results of the SafetyCube EC Horizons 2020 research project were presented, with special focus on the European Road Safety Decision Support System  (DSS) (www.roadsafety-dss.eu) The SafetyCube DSS is expected to enable policy-makers and stakeholders to select and implement the most appropriate strategies, measures and cost-effective approaches to reduce casualties of all road user types and all severities in Europe and worldwide.  video

VTI – 7th Conference on Traffic and Transport Psychology (ICTTP), 2020

The Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI) and the Vehicle and Traffic Safety Centre at Chalmers (SAFER) organised the 7th International Conference on Traffic and Transport Psychology (ICTTP) which was held on August 25-27th 2020 in Gothenburg, Sweden. The Conference philosophy is Taking the Vision Zero Initiative into a New Decade. The Swedish Vision Zero Initiative on road safety is an ethical standpoint that no-one should die or be seriously injured in traffic. The key focus of this conference was on the role that traffic and transport psychology can play in reaching the ethical standpoint that no-one should die or be seriously injured in traffic by providing a common ground for future interdisciplinary research. link

UNECE – Road Safety Performance Review Project Final Capacity Building Workshop, Kachreti, 2018

UNECE‘s project “UNDA Road Safety Management Capacity Building Project” aims to assist four countries (Albania, Georgia, the Dominican Republic and Viet Nam) in the ECE, ESCAP and ECLAC regions to address their priority road safety needs by improving their national road safety management systems. The Final Road Safety Performance Review Capacity Building Workshop took place with great success in Kachreti, Georgia, on 15-16 February 2018 and was initiated by policy dialogue with national road safety stakeholders on how to use Road Safety Performance Review recommendations to generate road safety actions. The objective was to provide information and best practice for national government officials and other road safety stakeholders (NGO, academia, private sector) from Albania and Georgia.

SWOV is organizing the 6th HUMANIST Conference which will be host on 13-14 June 2018 in the Hague, The Netherlands. How can countries best harness transport and trade to drive progress in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)? How can enhancing countries’ statistics on trade, transport and road safety support this process? This was the focus of discussions at a Workshop organized by UNECE in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport and Maritime Affairs and Ministry of Economy of Montenegro, on 11-12 October 2017 in Podgorica, Montenegro. A key objective was strengthening countries’ knowledge of road safety, transport and trade-related SDGs, with UNECE highlighting the relevance of the SDG framework to the sustainability of national transport and trade policies.

6th IRTAD International Conference, Marrakesh, 2017

The International Traffic Safety Data and Analysis Group (IRTAD) of the International Transport Forum (ITF/OECD) organised with great success the 6th IRTAD Conference, “Better road safety data for better safety outcomes” on 10-12 October 2017, in Marrakesh, Morocco. The objectives of the conference were to discuss improvements in the quality of data systems and data analysis in IRTAD and other countries through discussion of methodological issues to improve road safety data collection and analysis at country and city level, through showcasing recent initiatives to improve the quality of safety data collection and analysis and through presentation of recent research and analysis undertaken by the IRTAD Group.

The World Road Association (PIARC)’s Technical Committee D.5 “Road Tunnel Operations”, the French PIARC Committee and the French Center for Tunnel Studies (CETU) are pleased to announce the First International Conference on Road Tunnel Operations and Safety, which will be held in Lyon, France on 3-5 October 2018. It will be of great relevance for owners, operators, designers, representatives of fire departments, suppliers, installers. The 12th ITS European Congress took place with great success from 19 to 22 June 2017 at the Strasbourg Convention Centre. Under the theme “ITS Beyond Borders”, the Congress focused on the people, intelligent mobility users, as every day hundreds of thousands of them are crossing the French-German border to live their daily lives. During the Congress, the City and Eurometropolis of Strasbourg and ERTICO – ITS Europe hosted the second edition of the Mayors’ Summit. City mayors and leaders from Europe gathered again to explore opportunities, experiences and strategies related to present and future contributions of ITS to seamless travel and sustainable, efficient and innovative mobility. The 12th European ITS Congress 2017 was organised by ERTICO – ITS Europe in partnership with the European Commission and hosted by the City and Eurometropolis of Strasbourg.

ETSC – Who’s On Track? – Road Safety Performance Index (PIN) Conference 2017

The 2017 PIN Conference took place with great success in Brussels on 20 June, organised by the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC). The EU has set a target to halve road deaths by 2020. Which countries are on track, and which are playing catch-up? At the 2017 PIN conference, ETSC launched its latest Road Safety Performance Index (PIN) annual report looking at why some countries are still making progress on road safety and some are going in reverse. Two areas were highlighted where action is needed to ensure future progress: work-related road safety and reducing deaths in single-vehicle collisions. The event also saw the unveiling of this year’s PIN Award winner, presented to Switzerland for outstanding progress on road safety.

Universita Degli Studi di Brescia – Living and Walking in Cities Conference, Brescia, 2017

The Living and Walking in Cities Conference, organised by the Department of Civil, Environmental, Architectural Engineering and Mathematics of Universita Degli Studi di Brescia, now in its 23rd edition, was held with great success in Brescia, on 15-16 June 2017. This Conference traditionally looks at different themes concerning the quality of life in urban areas and the goal of this event is to gather researchers, road users, administrators, technicians, city representatives and experts aiming to discuss problems that affect the safety of pedestrians in the city, especially of children and persons with reduced mobility. Swedish Ministry of Enterprise and Innovation – Vision Zero Conference, Stockholm 2017

The Vision Zero Conference organised by the Swedish Ministry of Enterprise and Innovation, Trafikverket (Swedish Transport Administration) and Transportstyrelsen (the Swedish Transport Agency) and took place in Stockholm on 14-15 June 2017. How do we reach Vision Zero in the light of UN’s Sustainable Development Goals? The aim of the Vision Zero Conference was to provide new impetus to the promotion of road transport safety at the strategic level. The main focus was on best practice, innovation and future challenges. The Vision Zero Conference’s different sessions:

  • Vision Zero around the world/UN’s Sustainable Development Goals
  • 20 years with Vision Zero
  • Livable Cities
  • New Technology and Innovation
  • Role of Humans and Organisation from a Vision Zero perspective

Policy makers, road safety practitioners, together with high-level representatives from industry and international academia shared their experiences, aim to find common goals and discuss the way forward.

RSI Panos Mylonas/ETSC – YEARS Country Seminar Athens 2017

The Road Safety Institute Panos Mylonas and the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) organised with great success a country seminar in Athens on 12 June  2017, within the framework of the ETSC YEARS project (Young Europeans Acting for Road Safety). The aim was to debate on the dangers and policy recommendations for young road users on European and national level. Representatives from the Greek Authorities, road safety experts and stakeholders as well as the European Commission representation in Athens discussed and contributed on good practices in Greece and in Europe.   pdf5    NTUA presentation concerned:

49th CIECA Congress, Trondheim, 2017

The 49th CIECA General Assembly and Congress took place in Trondheim, Norway, on 8-9 June 2017. With the Congress, entitled “Well-educated driving instructors and examiners: a pre-requisite for responsible drivers”, CIECA focused on the current efforts in the field to affirm that the quality of the education of driving examiners and driving instructors, has a decisive impact in the process of developing future responsible drivers.

SWOV – UDRIVE and Naturalistic Driving Symposium, Hague, 2017

The 6th International Naturalistic Driving Research Symposium and the UDRIVE Final Event organized by SWOV, Virginia Tech and UDRIVE took place with great success in Hague, Netherlands, on 7-9 June 2017. The 6th International Naturalistic Driving Research Symposium provided with a thorough overview of international naturalistic driving and riding studies and insight into the next generation of this type of studies. In 2017, the symposium was organized in conjunction with the EC FP7 UDRIVE research project, where the results of this European Naturalistic Driving study were presented.

NTUA – The Future of Road Safety Research Workshop, 2017

NTUA within the framework of the Fourth UN Global Road Safety Week organised with great success a Workshop titled “The Future of Road Safety Research” on 15 May 2017 at the NTUA Campus in Athens. The objective of this Workshop was to highlight through an intensive flow of presentations the main findings and challenges of key road safety research projects carried out within the NTUA Laboratory of Traffic Engineering and to open up the discussion in a round table on the future of road safety research in Greece, in Europe and worldwide. 13th PRI World Congress and Exhibition, Tunisia, 2017

The 13th PRI World Congress and Exhibition on “Road Governance & its Impact on Road Safety: Achieving UN Decade of Action’s Road Safety Targets“, organised by La Prévention Routière Internationale (PRI) took place with great success in Gammarth, Tunisia, on 3 – 7 May 2017. Loughborough University – Short Course on Safe System Approach, Loughborough, 2017

A new two-day short course “The Safe System Approach: Managing for Better Road Safety Results” which has been developed by the Loughborough University Design School in association with Jeanne Breen Consulting took place with great success on 11-12 April 2017, in Loughborough. The background to this initiative is the adoption of Safe System by an increasing number of agencies, cities and jurisdictions in the United Kingdom and in the British Road Safety Statement.  This two-day course has been formulated to support professionals from the many sectors and disciplines involved in road safety and road traffic injury prevention, both in public and private sectors. The aim is to assist in the understanding of the Safe System goal and approach and what is involved in its broad implementation in terms of transport, planning, highway, vehicle, health, insurance, enforcement, education and research fields.

Transportation Alternatives – Vision Zero Cities Conference, New York 2017

Since New York City adopted its Vision Zero policy in 2014, other cities across the US have launched their own initiatives aimed at eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries. The street safety advocacy group Transportation Alternatives held its third Vision Zero Cities conference, on 4-5 May in New York City, bringing together policy makers and experts from around the nation and world to formulate new strategies to save lives. “With traffic fatalities and injuries spiking across the nation, many Vision Zero cities are experiencing setbacks in their efforts as we begin 2017,” said Paul Steely White, Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives. “We’re calling on our street safety warriors and defenders to join forces and share ideas to keep the movement on track and rolling.”

ITF / Polis – Safer City Streets Workshop, Paris 2017

More than 50 experts from cities around the world met in Paris, France, on April 20-21 for the first Workshop of the “Safer City Streets” global traffic safety network for liveable cities created by the International Transport Forum with support from the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) in October 2016. Just over six months after its launch, Safer City Streets counts 38 participating cities around the world. The first meeting provided the opportunity to exchange knowledge on road safety policies and learn from other cities’ experiences.

A joint workshop session with POLIS, the European network of cities and regions for sustainable transport, further explored the issue of risk exposure data and addressed collaboration with hospitals to improve knowledge of crashes.  pdf5  NTUA’s presentation concerned:

IRU – Workshop on Mobility 2030: A Global Vision, New Delhi, 2017

The International Road Transport Union (IRU), the world’s road transport organisation, is leading a global initiative looking into the role and place of passenger transport, in particular that of buses and taxis, in the future mobility ecosystem by 2030. IRU is organising a Workshop on Mobility 2030, on 9 May 2017 in New Delhi, India. This workshop aims at contributing to a global vision on Mobility for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 and implementing New Urban Agenda as also to help the developing countries like India to address the challenge of rising congestion and pollution, particularly in urban areas, and to better tap into the tremendous opportunities that sustainable transport can make possible.

FEHRL – Infrastructure Research Meeting (FIRM17), Brussels, 2017

The FEHRL Infrastructure Research Meeting 2017 (FIRM17) took place with great success on 5-7th April 2017 in Brussels, Belgium. The theme was “The future transport system: a public-private enterprise embracing infrastructure and vehicles across all modes“, Key highlights included the presentation of FEHRL’s new Strategic European Road Research Programme (SERRP), key addresses from the main stakeholders (EC, CEDR, PIARC, ERTRAC, ECTP), outline of the vision for the future cross-modal transport infrastructure and its implementation plan, a round table of the deployment of automated connected vehicles and a workshop about training and knowledge transfer for transport stakeholders.
